India certainly has spent a lot of words on microfinance - but the outstanding loans under microfinance amount to no more than 1.3% of bank credit outstanding from Scheduled Commercial Banks (we do not even include the loans from Cooperative banks and other financial institutions). With such tiny flows, it is difficult to conclude that microfinance did not make a difference in India. At best such an intervention can ease liquidity problems for some and make lives better for a small proportion of the poor.
