On August 11th, the Centre for Micro Finance, in conjunction with the Self Employed Womens' Association (SEWA), hosted a day-long seminar on Risk Mitigation in Agriculture. The event was meant to highlight the risks faced by farmers in India, specifically in the context of two CMF studies that evaluate tools to manage production and price risk.
CMF principal researcher Shawn Cole of Harvard Business School presented the findings of his/CMF's ongoing evaluation of SEWA's rainfall-indexed weather insurance product. Experts in agricultural risk and risk management such as Mr. Kolli Rao, Deputy General Manager of Agricultural Insurance Company of India (AIC), were present to comment and engage with the study as well as the larger issues involved. CMF's study on Future Prices was also presented with similarly high-level respondents from NCDEX etc.
